According to Lipset, the economic development of a country is directly related to the sustenance of democracy within that country. This would imply that the wealthier a country is, there would be greater chances that it would be able to sustain democracy. This is largely because when the society is deeply stratified and there exists huge gulfs between the impoverished (have-nots) and the elite (haves) sections; then it results in tyranny or oligarchy (Lipset, 1959). In the given situation, the eleven countries have scored higher than the median score on the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI).
